Recovery Progress
0 of 9 steps
⚠️ After an earthquake, take it one step at a time. Your safety comes first — don't rush back into damaged structures.
1
Ensure Personal Safety
Check yourself and family for injuries. Move away from damaged buildings. Watch for aftershocks — they can cause additional damage. Stay in open areas until shaking completely stops.
2
Inspect Your Property
Check for structural damage from outside first. Look for cracks in walls, shifted foundations, and leaning structures. If the building looks unsafe, do NOT enter. Call a structural engineer for assessment.
3
Check Utilities
Check for gas leaks (smell or hissing sound) — if found, leave immediately and call the gas company. Turn off electricity at the breaker if you see damaged wiring. Check water pipes for breaks.
4
Document All Damage
Take photos and videos of all damage before any cleanup or repairs. Document damage to the building, personal property, and surrounding area. Keep a written log with dates and descriptions.
5
Contact Insurance
Call your insurance company as soon as possible. Note: standard homeowners insurance typically does NOT cover earthquake damage — you need a separate earthquake policy. File your claim with all documentation.
6
Secure Your Property
Board up broken windows and openings. Cover damaged roof areas with tarps. Remove valuables from unsafe areas. Lock up to prevent theft. Keep receipts for all emergency repairs.
7
Begin Repairs
Hire licensed contractors for structural repairs. Get multiple estimates. Make sure contractors are insured and bonded. Prioritize structural safety over cosmetic repairs. Check local permits required.
8
Apply for Disaster Aid
Register with FEMA if a federal disaster is declared. Check state and local disaster relief programs. Contact the Red Cross and local community organizations for immediate assistance with food, shelter, and supplies.
9
Take Care of Mental Health
It's normal to feel anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed. Talk to family, friends, or a counselor. Watch for signs of PTSD — trouble sleeping, flashbacks, or persistent anxiety. Reach out to disaster mental health services.
